Meanwhile on TikTok: New York Artist Goes Viral For Impromptu Drawings of Subway Riders, Please Enjoy

It’s rare that a story about TikTok has a positive spin. Generally, when we write about the video-sharing platform, it’s to report how insane or dangerous a new trend is. But if you like good news, today is your lucky day, because this story is all about how one artist is using the social media service to make other people’s lives a little brighter.

His name is Devon Rodriguez, and he’s a 25-year-old based in New York. The Bronx native’s TikTok account, @devonrodriguezart, went viral last summer after he posted a video of a drawing he did of a fellow subway rider. Now, his vids of his art and his subjects’ reactions to it have garnered him a faithful following of 19.8 million fans who fawn over him.

“They’ll send me paragraphs and paragraphs, and I read a lot of the DMs, so I’m like, ‘Wow, that’s so crazy that they think that I’ll never see this but they still feel compelled to send it because they feel like they have to. It’s so amazing,” he told Today.

He’s so famous thanks to TikTok that he now has brand deals and even signed with United Talent Agency. His dream is to travel to other countries and capture characters on their public transit systems.

“I’m always getting all these comments saying, ‘Oh, my God, come to the Tube in London or come to the Paris subway.’ So I want to do that and I want to create a series,” he said.

He seems to be well on his way. Check out a few of these awesome videos of his fresh style.
