You’ll want to check your cabinets if you’ve bought popcorn lately. The FDA has issued a heightened risk classification for two batches of recalled popcorn, which could be deadly if consumed by certain people.
Make sure you didn’t buy potentially deadly recalled popcorn
If you bought Butter & Yeast Popcorn manufactured by Yummy Monkey Organics and distributed by Kester Foods, you need to check it for the following info:
- “Enjoy by” dates of 9/21/24 and 10/13/24
- UPC code 9 96692 66641 2
- Weight of 5.25oz
If your bags match these, you should be aware of a labeling issue that caused the popcorn to be recalled. The popcorn is has allergen labels for butter and ghee. However, it’s missing one for milk.
Milk allergies can cause anaphylaxis in individuals with a milk allergies, which can be deadly if untreated. As such, the FDA issued a Class II risk classification for the recall on September 10. Fortunately, the popcorn itself isn’t tainted. So, if you’re like these folks and you don’t have a milk allergy you’ll be fine.
The FDA defines a Class II recall as: a situation in which use of or exposure to a violative product may cause temporary or medically reversible adverse health consequences or where the probability of serious adverse health consequences is remote.
So, if you have a milk allergy and you think you may have purchased this popcorn recently, check and make sure you didn’t inadvertently buy a product you’re allergic to.
