Finally, some good news about coronavirus! A new study published in the Journal of Nature Products states that cannabis compounds stopped Covid-causing viruses from penetrating healthy human cells.
Researchers from Oregon State University identified two compounds – cannabigerolic acid, or CBGA, and cannabidiolic acid, or CBDA – during chemical screenings. According to Bloomberg, “they bound to spike proteins found on the virus and blocked a step the pathogen uses to infect people.”
“These compounds can be taken orally and have a long history of safe use in humans,” said Richard van Breemen, a researcher with Oregon State’s Global Hemp Innovation Center, in a statement. “They have the potential to prevent as well as treat infection by SARS-CoV-2.”
It’s all very technical and complicated, but if we’re understanding even a smidgen of this study’s results, we think what it’s saying is that pot might prevent Covid?
It sounds far-fetched, and it’s probably too soon to declare it definitively, but we would be more than happy to act as guinea pigs and see if getting stoned will keep us from getting sick.
