Meanwhile in Florida: Artist Sells Her Eggs as NFT at Miami Art Basel, Sounds Like Florida Fartwork to Us

NFTs are the hottest commodity on the market these days. In case you’re unfamiliar with the acronym, NFTs (or non-fungible tokens) are a kind of unique digital art form purchased and peddled with cryptocurrency.

People have gotten pretty crazy with NFTs, selling everything from a 52-minute recording of flatulence to the first tweet. Now Armenian artist Narine Arakelian is breaking ground in the NFT sphere by hocking a painting that includes an embedded contract guaranteeing the buyer access to one of her eggs.

The piece is titled “Live” and Arakelian fully intends it to produce a child, ideally for a couple who has struggled with infertility.

“I am so happy to bring a child into the world through my artwork. It’s a beautiful act of creativity to give the gift of art and life,” said Arakelian, who is herself the mother of a 21-year-old son. “My artworks are all my children and the fact this one will actually produce a child is wonderful. The art will always mean so much to the buyer because it brought them their child! It will always carry that special memory.”

But just in case you thought that this sounded dangerously like something out of a sci-fi movie, the artist has stated, “the child will be a child once they are born, not a piece of art.”

It’s all well and good to talk about selling your genetic material, but if and when a buyer the artist isn’t crazy about steps forward, we suspect this story will take another turn. We should also mention Arakelian is 42, so the quality of that egg might be questionable.

We’re not investing our funds in NFTs anytime soon, but if we were, our money would be on the fart recording instead.
